In a world pervaded by economic globalization, market liberalization, multiculturalism, social and environmental conflicts, we tend via educational policies and current academic discourses for a scientific and technological education for all citizens who could reply proactively to demands arising from such issues. This growing need is stated to develop several educational projects that support their teaching and didactic guidelines within a modern-day epistemology; join democratic values to teaching practices; make visible the ideological and ethical relationships of training programs; and generate appropriate contexts for strengthening research in science education, among others.


Training professionals in science education demands very significant involvement at the national and international arena. The urgency with which we are seeking a better science education is related to the need to develop an understanding of the world in which we live. Based on prompt advances in science and technology we run the risk of living in a very short time, amidst a jungle of gadgets and devices completely unknown, with a population who consumes them passively and lies uncritically before its developments. If we add to this consideration those decisions the population take which should be based on knowledge of science and technology, there is another risk —maybe an education that provides training but lacking essentials for a responsible citizenship.


Societies in the process to strength a scientific and technological culture cannot stay out of these implications. Their efforts to address science education should be stronger in order to foster the development of a basic scientific culture. From this perspective, training teachers and researchers in science didactics is one of the central tasks to be carried out.


The Dept. of Physics at the Universidad Pedagógica Nacional has built a strong tradition generally in the teaching science and specifically in physics, and the research of issues of its own. This work has allowed us to offer postgraduate training programs over two decades to meet teachers' updating and qualification demands, both physics and sciences and training researchers.


To meet our mission, the Dept. accepts a need to assess its performance and adapt a proposed curriculum to demands of the time in order to provide relevant and updated development alternatives for teachers in the country, backing the consolidation of an academic community in science education and transforming the pedagogical practice in a research issue.


In this framework, we propose a program of Master's Degree in Teaching Natural Science, which reflects the experience of the program of Specialization in Teaching Baseline Natural Sciences offered by the Dept. of Physics since 1993.


The Master proposed is an integral part of the Advanced Training System (sifa) at the Universidad Pedagógica Nacional, which seeks to “contribute to the development and strengthening of the field of sciences, arts, humanities, philosophy, art, technology, education and pedagogy in Colombia by implementing projects and programs of research and academic activities that put into circulation the knowledge from research and a systematic reflection to strengthen the University competency in teacher training at the highest level required by the education system.” (Resolution 031 of 2007, Higher Council.)


The Master program as defined in Article 6 of Decree 1001, 2006, of the Ministry of National Education is to Professionalize. To achieve these purposes we take advantage of the experience during the last fifteen (15) years by training specialists in Teaching Science, from which systematizing is assumed as a research practice which lets on the one hand understanding and transforming pedagogical practices, and secondly backs the professionalization of science teachers. Such experience is made in this paper in terms of Teaching Science as Explanations Building, which is proposed as a research line to support the professionalization of Masters in Teaching Science.
