About Us

Echoing words by Director-General of Unesco, Koichiro Matsuura, at the launch of "International Philosophy Day" on November 22, 2002, ‘How could Unesco, as the intellectual and ethical arm of the United Nations, function without promoting philosophical reflection as the basis for democracy, human rights and a just society?’, and consistent and dialoguing with other disciplinary and pedagogical knowledge and practices, currently philosophical education is called to take part not only in the analysis of the epistemological and sociological issues arising from development of current information and communication technologies –ICTs–, to question unjust economic and political relations established between nations and people, but also promote conceptually ways of democratic life and intercultural ties based on mutual respect between the historical identities and the human condition.

In a country where a deep-rooted violence on historical experience has been translated into an inability of well-reasoned arguments, i.e. ‘being in somebody else's shoes’ as Kant claimed in The Critique of Judgment, rather than transmitting a philosophical tradition, it is just promoting a tolerant and pluralistic democratic culture committed to fundamental freedom with social equity. A philosophical education in their community examination of meaning conditions of human existence, criticism of the inhumane existence status and a perspective of more humane living conditions, is the cornerstone of educational and cultural revolution required by our society.

Since Socratic maieutic, a philosophical praxis has been taken place in educational terms, so a search for reality meaning has been both an educational development of the philosophical community that shares some ways of searching and the subject analysis of the ontological, aesthetic, epistemological, ethical and political principles of any human project, the treatment of several historical and systematic issues of philosophical tradition, has an intrinsic educational feature.

Conversely, the specialist training of knowledge and pedagogical practices works as a truly philosophical education where this concept refers both to an educational subject –education in philosophy– and its own nature (a philosophical education–. Then pedagogy is a hinge between education and discipline that allows a lifelong self-training of education in philosophy.

The Bachelor Degree of Philosophy aims to train educators in philosophy who:

- Master pivotally a disciplinary and pedagogical knowledge, cross-disciplinary enriched.

- Perform competitively in the teaching profession.

- Implement creatively the current computing trends in philosophy teaching.

Commit critically with the educational revolution of Colombian society.
